Minecraft Mining Mechanics Guide
Block Hardness & Break Time
Every block in Minecraft has a specific hardness value that determines the base time required to break it.
- Hardness values range from 0 (instant break) to 50 (Obsidian).
- Bedrock has a hardness of -1, indicating it is unbreakable.
- Actual break time = Hardness × 1.5 (correct tool) or Hardness × 5 (wrong tool).
- If tool tier is insufficient (e.g. Wooden Pickaxe on Diamond Ore), drops will not spawn.
Tool Speed Multipliers
Different tool materials provide different speed multipliers.
- Hand: 1x speed
- Wooden Tools: 2x speed
- Stone Tools: 4x speed
- Iron: 6x / Diamond: 8x / Netherite: 9x / Gold: 12x
Enchantments & Effects
Enchantments and potion effects can significantly alter mining speed.
- Efficiency: Adds (Level² + 1) to speed per level.
- Haste: Increases speed by 20% per level (Haste II = 40%).
- Mining Fatigue: Drastically reduces speed (Level III reduces to 0.37%).
- Aqua Affinity: Removes the 5x penalty for mining underwater.
Instant Mining
When break time is less than 1 game tick (0.05s), it is called Instant Mining.
- This usually requires Diamond/Netherite Pickaxe with Efficiency V plus Haste II beacon effect.
- Instant mining is the fastest way to clear large areas in survival mode.
- It allows players to mine at maximum sprinting speed.
- Common instant-mine blocks: Stone, Netherrack, Sand, Dirt, etc.
